Public Health – Seattle & King County announced Wednesday (Sept. 1st) that Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) has been detected at “levels of concern” in shellfish samples collected along county shorelines, and as a result, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has closed all of King County to the recreational harvest of shellfish, including the shorelines of Des Moines.

Advisory signs are being posted along area beaches and harbors warning people to not collect shellfish from these areas. The closure includes clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and other species of mollusks. Crabs and shrimp are not included in the closure.

Commercial beaches are sampled separately and commercial products should be safe to eat.

PSP poisoning can be life-threatening and is caused by eating shellfish containing a potent neurotoxin. A naturally occurring marine organism produces the toxin.

The toxin is not destroyed by cooking or freezing.

According to Wikipedia:

PSP can be fatal in extreme cases (particularly in those who are already immuno-suppressed). Children are more susceptible. PSP affects those who come into contact with the affected shellfish by ingestion.[1] Ten to thirty minutes after ingestion, symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and tingling or burning lips, gums, tongue, face, neck, arms, legs, and toes.[1] Shortness of breath, dry mouth, a choking feeling, confused or slurred speech, and lack of coordination are also possible.

A person cannot determine if PSP toxin is present by visual inspection of the water or shellfish. For this reason, the term “red tide” is misleading and inaccurate. PSP can only be detected by laboratory testing.

Recreational shellfish harvesting can be closed due to rising levels of PSP at any time. Therefore, harvesters are advised to call the DOH Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632 or visit the Biotoxin Website: http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/sf/biotoxin.htm before harvesting shellfish anywhere in Puget Sound.

We’ll see you down at the marina this Saturday for the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market! There will be loads of fantastic fruits and vegetables available, so it’s a great time to think about freezing, canning and making jams and jellies!

This week’s live entertainment at the market is the Fabulous Po’ Boys.

It’s the Freshest and Tastiest (and Rockinest) thing to do on a Saturday – and this week, an all-female band called Sister Wives will rock the Des Moines Farmers Market, which runs from 10am -- 2pm at the South Marina Park.

Fresh This Week include a variety of apples, perfect for a summertime apple pie.

Or try new recipes like Norman potato salad with apples or thyme-roasted apples and onions.

And while you’re planning that apple pie, you can also enjoy the musical sounds of Sister Wives, who describe themselves as:

Ranging from soulful blues to fiery rock to all-out dance band, the Sister Wives defy the conventional norms typically set for all-women bands with the range and depth of their musical energy and virtuosity.

The Sister Wives display a multitude of musical attitudes in a style that is part Stevie Ray Vaughn, a little Sippie Wallace, and a little Allman Brothers.

Their live shows persuade even the most skeptical that “Girls Rock!”

Here’s video proof of how Sister Wives can get people dancin’:

Speaking of videos, here’s a time lapse one we shot at last Saturday’s market – see if you can spot yourself, or someone you know, or maybe a bank robber:

Oh, and be sure to drop by The Waterland Blog booth for a live demo on how we “blog.”

Music4Life is a program to benefit elementary (fourth and fifth grade students) in Highline Public Schools.  The program is a collaboration between Highline Public Schools, the Rotary Club of Des Moines and many individuals and businesses, partnering to expand music education for all children in the Highline School District.

Music means different things to different people.  To children, learning to play a musical instrument is a meaningful activity -- it’s fun and it builds relationships that can last a life time.  To youth, music opens up the world -- its history and its many cultures -- and provides opportunities for teamwork and meaningful forms of self-expression.  Educators know that music benefits students academically, especially in mathematics, science, history and world languages.  Our community understands that music education helps a person lead a richer, fuller, more meaningful life -- and an arts-rich community is a more desirable place to live.

Music4Life is intended to give every student in the Highline Public Schools access to instruments in good working conditions so they can participate in instrumental and vocal music programs.  Initially, Music4Life will acquire 500 musical instruments and supplies to ensure that 50 percent of Highline Public Schools 4th and 5th grade students can participate in instrumental music.  In the years to come, Music4Life may expand to include a broader range of ages and grade levels, as well as additional music education programs.

Tickets can also be purchased at CorkyCellars99 Bottles (206) 824-9462, (253) 838-2558 or Des Moines Drug (206) 878-2345, and through Rotary Club of Des Moines.

Ever wonder what is lurking in the waters of Puget Sound? Fish, crustaceans, sea weed and yes, sharks! While the Discovery Channel is wrapping up Shark Week, the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market will be celebrating Puget Sound marine life this Saturday at the market.

Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center will be on hand to share information about Puget Sound sea life communities and will have some of their sea creatures for you to “see and touch.” MaST will also be at the market on Kids Day, September 11, and once a month for the entire 2011 season.

The market had over 43 vendors last week, the largest market this year! Come down this week and enjoy the sweet sounds of local group, Saltwater Saints. Fresh produce is bountiful and the flowers are spectacular. There are many hand crafted food and craft items as well.

The center is open to the public for Water Weekends every Saturday from 10am to 2pm – free of charge.

Hello again from the lovely Archery Bistro Kitchen! I’m just enjoying a quick break from answering some telephone messages. I have been getting many phone calls from people wanting to book our private dining rooms for company parties, birthdays, All-Star baseball parties, and even a private wine tasting! It’s a lot of fun working with each customer to plan their party and menu. You can do it too! Give us a call at (206) 421-3145 and ask for me, Chef Brandon!

Our July 25th Wine Dinner featuring Waterbrook Winery is just around the corner and we still have some spots available. Waterbrook Winery is in the heart of Walla Walla, a place so nice they named it twice! Wine dinners are not only a great place to learn about the wineries and the wine itself, but also to learn about what food to pair with wine. I love these dinners and enjoying mingling with our guests in the dining room to talk about where I was when I thought of a certain dish, or why I decided to pair this with that. Stop by Archery Bistro or give us a call to secure a spot at our July 25th Waterbrook Winery dinner.

Recently I have been taking some heat from some Moms from the neighborhood about our kid’s menu. So I fixed it! Kids are just as important to us as adults at Archery. My new kid’s menu has more to offer and is now more affordable! We also have an art competition for kids where they can win a gift certificate to bring their family into Archery PLUS ALL OF OUR KIDS MENU ITEMS ARE ONLY $6.00! That’s right, $6.00 and each entree includes a dessert! It’s been so cool getting to know some of the kids who enjoy coming in for cheeseburgers and deep fried candy bars and I’m confident they will love our new items I developed just for them!

Don’t forget to mention my Waterland Blog note when you come in and receive a FREE APPETIZER with the purchase of two or more entrees, kids entrée’s count, but only one appetizer per table please!

Hope you are having a great week and we hope to see you soon at Archery Bistro!

Wash it down with a glass of rose or one of our tropical signature cocktails! Hang out on the patio with your friends and keep those sunglasses on all night when our fire pit turns on!

Here is our first friendly reminder about our July wine dinner featuring Waterbrook Winery. It will take place on Sunday, July 25th. I would like to thank all who came to our Rodney Strong wine dinner this past Sunday. It was loads of fun and we had some amazing wines to drink! Keep in mind our next wine dinner will be with Waterbrook Winery on Sunday July 25th!

This past weekend I was invited to participate in the Leavenworth Wine and Food Festival and had a ton of fun with my cooking demonstration. Thanks to all our customers who came over to enjoy the festival with me. As I was in Leavenworth this past weekend it was so hot, I started thinking about our new patio and fire pit we just finished. It made me excited about our new summer menu. The new menu will include much “lighter items” and more “summer-friendly dishes.” So I’ve developed a few fun items which we’ll now offer on our regular menu; Seared Ahi Salad with a sweet wasabi vinaigrette, Mango and Papaya Salad with a cilantro dressing, and Grilled Alaskan Halibut with mango salsa, and our always popular Pulled Pork Sliders, just to name a few!

Be sure to come by this weekend for an 8 oz. Wagyu Beef Top Sirlion! We will be running this special today through Saturday. Have a safe and fun Independence Day weekend!

Happy Birthday America!

Well, according to my calendar summer is here! Hopefully the sun will come out this Sunday, the 27th for our June wine dinner featuring Rodney Strong Vineyards from Sonoma, California!

With great anticipation I’ve worked hard on the menu, and even harder tasting the wines! If that is actually “working hard.” Since the dinner is the week before my FAVORITE holiday, Independence Day, our menu for the wine dinner will be a cool innovative take on classic backyard barbeque foods. We will have mini corndogs with homemade ketchup and mustard, mac ‘n cheese with a delicious chardonnay, grilled pork chop with corn salsa, and for dessert we will have an awesome strawberry “pie!” Check out our website for the complete menu. And if the menu isn’t enough to get you in the door, the price itself will! $60 the 5 course meal including wines! It’s our lowest priced wine dinner yet! Once again, you can’t get this kind of offer anywhere! We have a few spots left, so call Archery to make your reservations for a great night of food and wine!

I will be in Leavenworth this weekend at the “Great Leavenworth Wine and Food Festival” on Saturday drinking some of the region’s finest wines. I will also be doing a cooking demonstration on the main stage at 2pm. So if you can, make your way over the mountains and come say hi!

I hope you have had a great week so far and please think of Archery Bistro when making your dining choices. We look forward to seeing you soon!

BTB Advertiser Archery Bistro (located at the Normandy Park Towne Center), would like our Readers to know about their latest food specials and events.

Here’s a letter from Chef Brandon about this week’s offering:

Only three more days until Father’s Day and if you don’t have dinner reservations, look no further. Archery Bistro is still accepting reservations so give us a call. We will be offering a three course menu for $19.99! The first course includes, Heirloom Green Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette, Vine Ripened Tomato Bisque, and a Prawn Cocktail with candied lemons. Entrees will feature our popular Prosciutto Wrapped Chicken Breast, Grill Alaskan King Salmon with Lime Leaf Rice, and Roasted Bell Pepper and Parmesan Ravioli with Lemon Alfredo Cream. Last but not least, dessert. We will have a Strawberry Rhubarb Tart and Chocolate Truffle Ganache Cake.

In addition to this menu, we will also feature a “Dad’s ONLY” menu! A selection of items that are a little more macho if you will. The first course features a Dungeness Crab Cake. The entrée is a Bacon Wrapped Filet with an Australian Rock Lobster Tail and for dessert, my version of the Banana Split! The banana split is special to me because my dad always said if I would hit a homerun in my baseball game, he would buy me a banana split. I NEVER hit a homerun, unless you count the defense making a fielding error or two! But my dad still bought me a banana split! He will be joining us for dinner this Sunday, and you should as well!

We still have spots available for our Wine Dinner on Sunday June 27th featuring Rodney Strong Wines. If you haven’t been to one of our Wine Dinners, now is the time. Since it will be the weekend before Independence Day, we will be showcasing a menu that is inspired by backyard barbeque foods. It is going to be a great time!

Hope to see you this Sunday!!

Chef Brandon
