What a fantastic season it’s been for The Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market – can you believe all the sunny Saturdays?
Unfortunately it is coming to an end on Saturday, Oct. 27.
That’s the bad news.
The good news?
The Annual Chili Cook-Off will be held that day! This is the annual crowning event for the Farmers Market, and is a fun and delicious fundraiser that helps sustain the market and benefit the Des Moines Dollars for Scholars, Business & Professional Woman’s Foundation and the Des Moines Area Food Bank. Contestants and tasters come from all around South King County to enjoy this great season-ending event.
This year 15 teams have signed up to play havoc with your taste buds. For only $4 you’ll get samples of chili, corn bread, bowl, spoon and wet nap and a chance to vote for your favorite. Chili is served on a “first come first served” basis starting at Noon and is served until 2 p.m. or until it runs out. The “People’s Choice” award is chosen by the tasters, so be sure to arrive in time to try them all, and vote for your favorite!
Every year a panel of judges is chosen and awards are given to first, second and third place. Possibly the most coveted award is the “People’s Choice Award”, because as the name says, it’s the chili the people love the most. The market will also be collecting donations for the Des Moines Area Food Bank and the Food Bank Backpack program, if you are able, please bring a food donation or cash (raffle) for them.
So bring your bib, appetite and Tums, you are guaranteed to have a good time while helping these fine community institutions remain strong.
