The philosophy of Des Moines Legacy Foundation is that “Des Moines is a community rich in parks & recreation stewardship and history dating back to the early 1900’s when citizens donated land for baseball fields (now Des Moines Field House Park). Donations such as land, play equipment, senior center equipment, computers, park maintenance support, plants and trees, athletic equipment, picnic tables, and benches, volunteer labor, and cash have all been integral to improving our quality of life here in Des Moines. The Des Moines Legacy Foundation is committed to preserving this tradition and expanding youth, adult, and senior parks & recreation opportunities and facilities throughout our community.”

This philosophy paired with the generosity of the people who attend Legacy Foundation events, purchase note cards & calendars and who bequeath gifts make for a “win-win” for the Des Moines community.

The foundation has recently created the Phyllis Ann Moore Endowment Fund after a substantial gift was received from Phyllis Ann Moore. Phyllis taught at Maywood Elementary School from the day it opened until the day it closed. In her 35 year teaching career, she was passionate about making an impact on her students and her church. Upon her passing, she made one last investment in Des Moines youth by providing a significant endowment specifically to benefit children in our community. This gift will help hundreds of kids in our community.

Proceeds from the annual Bayside Brunch and Auction, held at Anthony’s HomePort each November, is the funding source for the latest gift from this group. Seniors participating at the Des Moines Senior Activity Center were very excited to receive their 14 passenger shuttle donated by Des Moines Legacy Foundation. It is a gently used vehicle purchased for $26,913.11. This shuttle will make transporting seniors to area outings and adventures much safer, efficient, and comfortable.

The Des Moines Legacy Foundation is please to invite you to view their newly redesigned web site to learn more. They are always looking for volunteers to help with organizing events. Visit it at www.desmoineslegacy.org

Happy Thursday! Thanks to all of you who came out last Sunday for our Waterbrook Wine Dinner! It was great! The winemaker was handing out prizes after testing the diners on their wine knowledge! Don’t forget, the Normandy Park Hoop Fest will be taking place in our parking lot here at Archery Bistro this Saturday! We will be offering various lunch items and ice cold beers!!! Come down and check it out! Starting in August (dates to be determined) we will be doing “Hot August Nights.” Our parking lot will be transformed into a classic car show, with music, food, and drinks! Stay tuned for more info. Geez there is a lot going on down here! Sundays we have been selling food at the Music In the Park concert series at Mar Vista Park. We will be there this weekend selling some of our signature items!! Bring cash!! We have many events lined up for the month of August so we won’t be doing an August wine dinner. However, we have an award winning winery, Dutch John’s from Wenatchee, slated for September. It is sure to be a delicious evening! Stay tuned for the menu! Until next time!!! – Chef Brandon

Another addition to this year’s market, new meat vendor Mountain Beef. Mark and Amy Ramsden and kids are real ranchers. They use no motorized vehicles or electricity in their duties. Mark is in the saddle seven days a week and commented “this is joy ranching, if you figured out my hourly salary, it would be less than minimum wage.” Their ranch of 150,000 acres (they lease the land) is located on the Washington Oregon border in the Snake River Valley and mountains. All the beef is 100% free range grass fed. They specialize in providing families frozen beef orders for a year. They butcher the cattle in September and deliver 85,000lbs in October to Seattle area customers.

Upon arrival, the deck and side of a two story house was on fire.

Two adult occupants and one teenager evacuated safely due to a neighbor alerting them to the fire. There were no reported injuries and the occupants are staying with friends in the area.

After arriving at the scene within five minutes from the time the fire was reported, firefighters had the fire completely extinguished – within 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire was an electrical short in the hot tub. The occupants had been using it earlier in the evening and had noticed an odor of smoke.

Smoke and fire damages are estimated at approximately $80,000.

A cab driver for the Seattle-Tacoma International Taxi Association (STITA), Jaskaran Singh, is credited with finding and returning an envelope of cash to a family that flew into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and took a cab to a downtown hotel. The name of the family is not being used to protect their privacy.

“We arrived very late at night after a long flight from New York,” the traveler wrote to the city taxi authority and to the cab company. “Exhausted from our travels we took a STITA taxi driven by Mr. Jaskaran Singh from the Seattle airport to our hotel.

“My wife was holding a very large amount of cash in an envelope,” the traveler wrote. “This represented all the cash we had in our possession. In the hustle of getting out of the taxi with two small children and handling six pieces of luggage my wife unknowingly lost the envelope containing all our money.

“Upon arriving at our hotel room we soon discovered all our money was missing. We frantically searched the hotel lobby and outside street with no luck. My wife was crying hysterically and our trip was ruined. The children asked how we would survive with no money.

“One of my children thought he remembered the cab number but we were unsure of the taxi company name. From our hotel manager we obtained a phone number for STITA taxi company and called the dispatcher on the unlikely chance he could track down our driver. At this point we were unsure where we lost our money.”

The New Yorker said he told the dispatcher “our sad story and he instantly responded to the gravity of our situation.”

“Despite the large number of taxis at the Seattle airport that evening the dispatcher called me right back to say he was somehow able to locate our particular taxi.

“Moments later I received another call from my driver, Mr. Jaskaran Singh. The first words out of his mouth were ‘there’s a lot of money here.’ Mr. Singh appeared soon afterward and dropped off all our lost money.

“We will always remember Mr. Singh’s honesty and integrity,” the traveler said. “I share this experience in recognition of Mr. Jaskaran Singh efforts and the fine folks who work at the STITA taxi company who responded to our crisis. Mr. Singh’s actions were truly commendable and turned our worst nightmare into an example of humanity at its finest.”
