The philosophy of Des Moines Legacy Foundation is that “Des Moines is a community rich in parks & recreation stewardship and history dating back to the early 1900’s when citizens donated land for baseball fields (now Des Moines Field House Park). Donations such as land, play equipment, senior center equipment, computers, park maintenance support, plants and trees, athletic equipment, picnic tables, and benches, volunteer labor, and cash have all been integral to improving our quality of life here in Des Moines. The Des Moines Legacy Foundation is committed to preserving this tradition and expanding youth, adult, and senior parks & recreation opportunities and facilities throughout our community.”

This philosophy paired with the generosity of the people who attend Legacy Foundation events, purchase note cards & calendars and who bequeath gifts make for a “win-win” for the Des Moines community.

The foundation has recently created the Phyllis Ann Moore Endowment Fund after a substantial gift was received from Phyllis Ann Moore. Phyllis taught at Maywood Elementary School from the day it opened until the day it closed. In her 35 year teaching career, she was passionate about making an impact on her students and her church. Upon her passing, she made one last investment in Des Moines youth by providing a significant endowment specifically to benefit children in our community. This gift will help hundreds of kids in our community.

Proceeds from the annual Bayside Brunch and Auction, held at Anthony’s HomePort each November, is the funding source for the latest gift from this group. Seniors participating at the Des Moines Senior Activity Center were very excited to receive their 14 passenger shuttle donated by Des Moines Legacy Foundation. It is a gently used vehicle purchased for $26,913.11. This shuttle will make transporting seniors to area outings and adventures much safer, efficient, and comfortable.

The Des Moines Legacy Foundation is please to invite you to view their newly redesigned web site to learn more. They are always looking for volunteers to help with organizing events. Visit it at www.desmoineslegacy.org

Another addition to this year’s market, new meat vendor Mountain Beef. Mark and Amy Ramsden and kids are real ranchers. They use no motorized vehicles or electricity in their duties. Mark is in the saddle seven days a week and commented “this is joy ranching, if you figured out my hourly salary, it would be less than minimum wage.” Their ranch of 150,000 acres (they lease the land) is located on the Washington Oregon border in the Snake River Valley and mountains. All the beef is 100% free range grass fed. They specialize in providing families frozen beef orders for a year.
A cab driver for the Seattle-Tacoma International Taxi Association (STITA), Jaskaran Singh, is credited with finding and returning an envelope of cash to a family that flew into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and took a cab to a downtown hotel. The name of the family is not being used to protect their privacy.

“We arrived very late at night after a long flight from New York,” the traveler wrote to the city taxi authority and to the cab company. “Exhausted from our travels we took a STITA taxi driven by Mr. Jaskaran Singh from the Seattle airport to our hotel.

“My wife was holding a very large amount of cash in an envelope,” the traveler wrote. “This represented all the cash we had in our possession. In the hustle of getting out of the taxi with two small children and handling six pieces of luggage my wife unknowingly lost the envelope containing all our money.

“Upon arriving at our hotel room we soon discovered all our money was missing. We frantically searched the hotel lobby and outside street with no luck. My wife was crying hysterically and our trip was ruined. The children asked how we would survive with no money.

“One of my children thought he remembered the cab number but we were unsure of the taxi company name. From our hotel manager we obtained a phone number for STITA taxi company and called the dispatcher on the unlikely chance he could track down our driver. At this point we were unsure where we lost our money.”

The New Yorker said he told the dispatcher “our sad story and he instantly responded to the gravity of our situation.”

“Despite the large number of taxis at the Seattle airport that evening the dispatcher called me right back to say he was somehow able to locate our particular taxi.

“Moments later I received another call from my driver, Mr. Jaskaran Singh. The first words out of his mouth were ‘there’s a lot of money here.’ Mr. Singh appeared soon afterward and dropped off all our lost money.

“We will always remember Mr. Singh’s honesty and integrity,” the traveler said. “I share this experience in recognition of Mr. Jaskaran Singh efforts and the fine folks who work at the STITA taxi company who responded to our crisis. Mr. Singh’s actions were truly commendable and turned our worst nightmare into an example of humanity at its finest.”

The survey was conducted at 277 colleges and universities and involved more than 42,000 employees. The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff.

Highline was recognized in five categories, including:

Professional/Career-Development Programs

Teaching Environment

Job Satisfaction and Support

Work/Life Balance

Confidence in Senior Leadership

Highline is also one of the 39 institutions selected for The Chronicle’s Honor Roll, an honor that recognizes the top colleges and universities in their size categories – small, medium and large. Highline won in the medium-sized category.

Normandy Park Hoop Fest will serve as the kick-off event for “National Night Out,” which is Tuesday, August 3rd.

For more information contact Mary at (206) 248-8256.

Here are the rules:

Each team must register at least three players on or before the date of the tournament. Maximum roster size is four players per team. No additions, deletions and/or changes may be made after a team’s first game has started.

Teams using players not officially registered or using falsified information on rosters will be automatically disqualified from the event. Team captains are responsible and will be held accountable for all information.

The format of the tournament will be determined once all teams have entered. The tournament director reserves the right to change the format based on external events (i.e., inclement weather).

The court monitor will be the official timekeeper/scorekeeper and will be responsible for mediating all disputes. He/she has the right to overturn a call on the court if there is a justified reason to do so. The court monitor’s interpretation of the rules is final. In the event the court monitor cannot solve a dispute, a coin flip will be made to determine the outcome of the dispute.

Physically or verbally threatening or abusing a court monitor is cause for immediate disqualification.

Players and/or teams may be removed from the game at the discretion of the court monitor for abusive behavior, flagrant fouls or rough play. Unruly fans may also be removed from the area.

Teams must be at their court at the scheduled time. A five?minute forfeit time will be strictly enforced.

Each team must start and finish the game with at least two players.

A coin flip at the start of the game will determine first possession.

Successful shots taken from inside the 3?point line will be worth 1 point, while baskets made from outside the line are worth 2 points. Both feet must be clearly behind the line (when the shot is attempted) for the shot to count as two points.

All games are played to 21 points (win by 1) or 20 minutes (running clock), whichever comes first. The tournament director reserves the right to change the number of points and/or time limit due to external events.

If the game is tied after the 20 minutes have elapsed, then the game will be completed with a sudden death playoff. A coin flip will determine possession.

Player substitutions will be permitted on any deadball situation.

The player who is fouled is responsible for calling the foul. The foul must be called immediately in a clear and loud manner and all action must stop. If the player is fouled while shooting and makes the basket, the basket counts (the foul is ignored) and the opposing team takes possession. Otherwise, the team that was fouled retains possession and the ball is checked in as usual.

If a defensive player calls a foul on himself, the offensive team may continue to play even if the defense stops. If the offensive team chooses to stop play when a defensive player calls a foul, then action stops and the ball is checked in as usual.

On the 6th team foul, the player fouled will be awarded the option of shooting a free throw or retaining the possession of the ball, checking it in as usual. If the player elects to shoot a free throw, all other players must stand at least three feet behind the shooter. Regardless if the free throw is made or not, the opposing team takes possession.

If the court monitor rules that a foul was flagrant or meant to cause harm, the player fouled will shoot one free throw and that team will keep possession of the ball. The player called with a flagrant foul will get one warning. Any further flagrant fouls will result in immediate ejection from the game.

Any player(s) involved in fighting or continued misconduct will be disqualified from the tournament and will not be allowed to participate in future tournaments.

An unwritten 30?second shot clock is in effect at all times and may be enforced by the court monitor at his/her discretion. Once the court monitor has announced that the shot clock is in effect, each team has 30 seconds to get a shot off. The shot must make contact with the rim of the basket for the shot clock to be restarted. A defensive foul also resets the shot clock.

There is an imaginary 3?second lane near/under the basket. There is no camping in this lane. “Camping” violations are at the discretion of the court monitor. The court monitor will give a warning. Subsequent infractions will result in loss of possession.

Jump balls always go to the defense. They do not go to the team that yells “first”.

If a ball goes out of bounds and players and the court monitor cannot decide who gets possession of the ball, then a coin flip will decide possession.

The top of the backboard is out of bounds. The sides and bottom of the backboard are in bounds.

Shots that hit nothing (i.e., airballs) which are rebounded by the shooter without anybody else touching the ball is considered traveling and results in a turnover.

Timeouts – one 30?second timeout per team per game is permitted.

The court monitor has the right to make a ruling on any issues that are not covered within these rules.

If you have a story to tell about your time spent at the airport, or if you have personal mementos such as photos, uniforms, ephemera (contracts, tickets, advertisements, schedules, etc.), or even home movies taken at the airport, the Historical Society would like to hear from you.

The Society can make careful copies of photos and documents and return the originals to the owner in pristine, museum-quality conditions.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of preserving the history of Sea-Tac Airport, and of documenting its impact on the communities of Highline. Donors of memories and memorabilia will be entered in a drawing to win a dinner for two at Mick Kelley’s Irish Pub in Burien.

If you can help out, please contact the Society today by calling 206-246-6354, or by e-mailing editor@highlinehistory.org.

Here’s a great photo courtesy the historical society, of Opening Day of Sea-Tac International Airport, taken in July, 1949 (more great photos here):
