Jarrell Banks-Canady, 22, of Des Moines, plead “Guilty” Thursday (Nov. 15) in Garfield County Superior Court in connection with a wildland fire that burned several hundred acres near Lower Granite Dam (map below) in August, according to the Big Country News Connection .
As part of a plea agreement, Banks-Canady plead guilty to 2nd-degree reckless burning, which was reduced from the original charge of 2nd-degree arson.
Prosecutor Matt Newberg says Banks-Canady received credit for two days in jail and also paid full restitution for firefighting costs in the amount of over $9,000.
Banks-Canady, who was taking part in a large gathering at Illia Dunes on Aug. 25 (read our previous coverage here ), is believed to have been shooting off fireworks along the road and the sparks caused the fire.
There were no injuries and no structures damaged, although one fire truck with the Garfield County Fire District #1 did receive some damage during firefighting operations.
