Most people are unaware that medicines languishing in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

The rate of prescription abuse in the US is increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

In addition, many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused or outdated prescriptions.

With this in mind, the Des Moines Police Department has partnered with the DEA and will be hosting two National Take-Back Initiative collection sites in the City of Des Moines to collect unused or expired prescriptions and over the counter solid medications for safe disposal, with no questions asked.

For more information or for additional collection sites around the state visit call 1-800-882-959539 or visit
