Random Violence Or Just Plain Violent? Vandals Hit Des Moines’ Salon Michelle

by Brenda Anders

Salon Michelle on Marine View Drive was hit overnight by a crowbar-wielding thug who broke both the large plate glass window and glass doors.

Both were struck several times with a crowbar, leaving them shattered and riddled with holes. The vandal also moved the businesses’ freestanding sign in front of the door but did not damage it.

“The glass was everywhere,” stated Michelle Fawcett, salon owner. “We have spent hours cleaning up glass that was all over our waiting area.”

It appears the thugs were unable to gain entry to the salon and that no other businesses in the building were hit.

“The special film on the glass is probably what prevented entry into the building,” commented Sgt. Bob Collins of the Des Moines Police Department.

Michelle estimates there is several thousand dollars worth of damage.

“At least I was able to rearrange my schedule so I have not lost any business, although I will be staying late tonight to get everyone in.”  She went on to say, “I don’t do anything to anyone. I volunteer my time to help make this community a better place. Why would someone do this?”

Michelle has been a hairdresser here in Des Moines for over 20 years, opening her own shop 6-½ years ago. She is a board member of the Des Moines Legacy Foundation and volunteers every year for the annual Bayside Brunch, which benefits Des Moines Area seniors.

If you have any information regarding the vandalism to Salon Michelle or any other business in Des Moines, please call the Des Moines Police Department immediately at (206) 878-3301.

Workers clean up the broken plate glass and door windows at Salon Michelle on Wed. March 10th.

What a shame… our city is slowly going to hell and thanks to the city council and there eliminating our officers to help guard our city… well this is what you are going to get.. a flippin free for all! This is the second business hit in Des Moines in the last 30 days… Hats off to the city council for their fabulous decision to do the budget cuts. Am sure you all rolled up your sleeves to help clean up the salon!

I’m not a huge fan of our city council either but the community voted them in and I feel like it’s time we quit complaining about them and do our part to help our community.
Also I’m really sorry that happened to you Michelle.

Stop complaining? Absolutely not. That is called apathy and the council needs to know when we are not happy with a direction they are taking. Just because a particular council person gets a majority vote and is elected does not mean they get a clean pass on everything they do or don’t do. I will give you this, when they do a good job, then they also deserve our support and recognition. It is important for the council to understand how we feel so they can properly represent the community.

I too feel sorry for what happened to Michelle. It makes me sick to see what is happening in our community. I am however thankful we are finally hearing about what is going on in the city so we can let our voices be heard.

This is truly sad to me. Events such as this are becoming the norm rather than the exception. I won’t stop complaining about the council until they do something that impresses me or improves our community. I believe there were some candidates who ran this year with crime as their platform. However, there is a majority in Des Moines that is more concerned with senior lunches, water aerobics, and preserving old buildings…you get what you vote for!

    Wow!
What I was trying to say in a nice way was don’t just talk about it be about it!
Apparently no one got that so let me clarify myself.Joe you are always in the comments saying something about the city council but what are you doing to help the city of Des Moines?
Are you helping start a community watch program? Talking to the police to see what we can do to make DM a safer place?
So my point is besides complaining what are you doing?

This stuff is going to get much worse. I spoke with a Des Moines officer last week and he told me the DMPD Crime Task Force unit and the traffic unit have now been dismantled and those officer sent back to fill patrol positions due to the cuts and layoffs of officers.

I think if you review the campaign material from each of the recently elected candidates you will see that public safety was #1 on the list of items they campaigned on. Initially some such as Kaplan were saying they would restore the Police Department as soon as possible and now he has backed away from that. In my opinion, every additional dollar that comes into this city over what they budgeted for should be put directly into the police department budget but instead they’ll find a park that needs a new swing set, or dump more money in those crappy looking buildings in the beach park. It seems the priorities of this city administration and council are contrary to the wants, needs, disires of the citizens.
