My, how politcally correct can you be? It is not, not a HOLLLIDAY TREE …IT IS A CHRISTMAS TREE! aM i THE ONLY ONE WHO IS AVOIDING POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IN THE WHOLE OF DES MOINES!. We say, “Merry Christmas” to all who willl hear. At Easter we say “Happy Easter” ! What in the world is happening to our society and culture? Isn’t it time for us to stand up and, speaking English, yell for the citizens of Des Moines and away,,,”MERRY CHRISTMAS”? . Won’t someone join me in this?

Pat I could not agree with you more. When 96% of the United States celebrates Christmas, why on earth do we need to change our vocabulary so that we don’t offend the remaining minority. I have several Muslim, Jewish and Atheist friends all of whom said they are not at all offended by Christmas Trees or someone wishing them a Merry Christmas. Christmas is a major staple of the United States so we should refer to it as Christmas. I am not a Veteran, however, when I am wished Happy Veterans day, I am certainly not offended.

Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy Hanukkah

What a great start to the Christmas season. Thanks to the wonderful people who decorated the Christmas Tree and Santa Claus….He was to kind and good to all the children and even some adults sat with him. John L. Scott Real Estate people gave away Hot Chocolate and it was delicious!. The cup was also a good “hand warmer” as it was a bit chilly in the air. The best part was the music by the bands and the solos given. The Mt. Rainier Band came through again as they did this summer when they marched in the Des Moines Parade. What a great bunch of kids in our community. Des Moines is a great place to live!!

I’m disappointed to see that this was only posted 1 day prior to its happening. I checked around this site, and all over the internet for a week trying to find out when this was so I could attend. I also can’ t believe the city would not feel the need to, oh, I don’t know put out a sign maybe?? If there was one, it certainly wasn’t in plain sight. No signs at local businesses or in the parking lot of the area is it has been in the past. All too frequently does this city hold events without letting the public know they’re happening!

    Laura,
After reading your comments about the Tree Lighting at Big Catch Plaza I felt I had to respond. 1) The “city” is not the organizer of this event so it is not there fault that signs were not out. They do put the lights on the tree and allow us to use Big Catch Plaza. 2) A few small business owners and residents have taken on the task of organizing this community event which means lining up music, refreshments and a Santa appearance. 3) There were posters up in some of the downtown businesses and I am sorry you missed them. Also, it was announced in the Dec. issue of City Currents. (at this point I need to thank Morgan at All Points Yarn for desiging the poster and Print Place for printing) 5) Because of limited funds the dates on the banner were not changed so could not be used. 6) I will take the blame for not notifying the Waterland Blog sooner. Thanks to Janet for calling and making sure we had something posted. The turn out was wonderful and the bands from Des Moines Elementary, Pacific Middle School and Mt. Rainier did an outstanding job. The Choral Quartet from Highline Community College were a wonderful end to the entertainment. Santa’s arrival went off without a hitch and the count down for the lighting was applauded by all. Merry Christmas to All and enjoy the tree!

    Hey Dianne,
First, let me be one to thank you for all of your hard VOLUNTEER work that benefits our community. You and Rick do so much and get so little thanks. PS…Love the tree!!!

Second, it sounds like Laura would like to help you next year! Hopefully we will see her soon.

    Laura,
You may have noticed that we are in a bit of a budget crisis here in Des Moines. The good news for you is that there are going to be more volunteer opportunities.

I encourage you to join one of the fantastic civic groups here in Des Moines. There is the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, Des Moines Rotary Club, Destination Des Moines and that is just a start! Many of thier links are right here on this web site just to the left of what you are reading. They are always looking for new folks to join to help make our community a more plesant place to live…See you soon!
